History of UM PT


1979 Program in Physical Therapy admits first student.  Program is housed in the School of Education.  James Simon the founding Program Chair.
1981 Ira Fiebert becomes program Director.
1982 Program in Physical Therapy graduates its first class of students with a BS degree in Physical Therapy.
1985 Sherrill Hayes becomes program Director. 
1986 Program of Physical Therapy moves to the School of Medicine, as a Division in the   Department of Orthopaedics. 
1986 Program in Physical Therapy moves to an entry level Masters degree (MSPT)
1988 Program in Physical Therapy graduates first class of students with MSPT degree.
1988 Steven Rose, PhD, PT Editor of Physical Therapy joins the faculty as Associate Director for Research
1989 Program moves into its current home in the Plumer Building on the Coral Gables Campus of the University of Miami.
1989 Program in Physical Therapy wins the first Marquette Challenge.
1989 Steven J. Rose Laboratory for Clinical  Research dedicated to honor Dr. Rose who died in 1989.
1989 Steven J. Rose Student Research Award established.
1995 First PhD students admitted
1997 University of Miami, Physical Therapy Alumni Fellows established
1998 Steven J. Rose Memorial Endowed Scholarship Award established
1999 Linda Crane Memorial Scholarship established to honor Linda Crane, PhD, PT, CCS longtime UM PT faculty member and one of the first Board Certified PT Cardiopulmonary Specialists.
1999 First PhD Student Graduates
2001 Rubley/Roberts Endowed Service Scholarship Award Established
2004 Program in Physical Therapy graduates its first class with a DPT degree
2004 Program in Physical Therapy granted Department Status within the School of Medicine
