Marquette Challenge and Gala

History of the University of Miami – Marquette Challenge

Physical Therapy students at the University of Miami have long had a reputation for active participation in research efforts. Our students realize the future of physical therapy and the health of our patients depends on the strength and efficacy of our practice. Research is fundamental to demonstrating that our methods are sound, and to paving the way for new innovations and techniques.

In 1989, the physical therapy students of Marquette University in Wisconsin issued a challenge to all other physical therapy students In the country – the Marquette Challenge – in which schools could compete to raise the most funds for physical therapy research. In that inaugural year the physical therapy students of the University of Miami took the challenge – and won!! For the next 13 years, until 2001, the University of Miami either won the Challenge or was Co-Sponsor of the the Challenge.

Since 1989, the University of Miami’s students have raised over $85,000 for clinical research and the Foundation of Physical Therapy.

The Gala Evening

The Annual Challenge is a fundraising effort to benefit the Foundation for Physical Therapy. The highlight of the event is the grand University of Miami – Challenge Gala. This gala is usually held in February in an elegant and festive setting. For students, faculty, alumni and special guests alike, it is a spectacular night of great food, fun, and a chance to dance the night away. The evening is electrified by the suspense and drama of the Silent Auction. All of the exciting auction items are solicited by students from generous supporters. In addition, donors graciously contribute items for this and many other of the fundraising events.
